Climate change is the long-term change to typical weather patterns, such as average temperatures and rainfall. To some extent, climate change is natural and normal. Right now, though, we are speeding up climate change. When we burn fossil fuels like oil, coal, and natural gas to heat our homes and drive our cars, we release greenhouse gas pollutants like carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere. Those greenhouse gases act like a blanket, and while it’s cozy to stay warm at night and during the winter, that greenhouse gas blanket is now getting too warm. That extra warmth means we’re seeing more wildfires, hurricanes, and other natural disasters all around the world.
Luckily there are lots of small changes we can make to our everyday routines to help tackle the impacts of climate change and prevent some of its worst effects. We can ride our bicycles more. We can turn off phones and tablets when we’re not using them. We can plant trees – lots of trees! Did you know trees fight climate change by absorbing pollutant carbon dioxide and using the carbon to grow tall and strong? How cool is that!
